Animal Track & Sign Day Workshop

This one day workshop is designed to give those wishing to learn about tracking an insight into a world that often goes unnoticed. It also gives those with a keen interest in native wildlife, such as bird watchers or walkers, a platform to clearly identify and interpret signs of animal presence and activities.

Animal Track & Sign Day Overview

Your day will consist of a classroom session to cover key subjects, and look at examples of various clues you will find in the wild from skeletal remains to feeding sign and scat. This will be followed by a guided walk to discuss and observe real sign, and test your new skills, before returning to the camp at the end of the day.

The day runs from 0930-1630, and as we will be out for a good part of the day you will need to bring a drink bottle and packed lunch and wear suitable outdoor clothing.
Tea coffee and biscuits will be supplied at our camp.
Course content:

•  Common British mammals and birds
•  Animal prints and tracks
•  Feeding signs
•  Burrows, nests and other beds
•  Scat identification
•  Kill sites
•  Tracking concepts and techniques
•  Wildlife & the Law (protected species)

Conducted from an expedition-style teaching environment in a beautiful mixed broadleaf and coniferous woodland with an eco-friendly composting toilet.  The camp fire is under cover, and acts as a communal area with a hot kettle constantly on the fire, coffee, tea, biscuit tin and squash available all day.

Course venue

Bayford, Hertfordshire
Our Woodland camp is based in beautiful ancient broadleaf woodland of 45 acres. Part of the Broxbourne Woods complex, the Bayford location is close to rail and road connections, (only half an hour from the M25, and near the A10) but entirely secluded, uninterrupted by public footpaths and secure with no public access.

Rich in traditional timber species such as Oak, Ash and Hornbeam, there is also a significant understorey of Birch and Hazel and plentiful Yew, Black Pine and Wild Service trees. Being so structurally diverse the woodland supports a wide variety of wildlife including Badger and Deer.
